The traditional Sawa festival, which takes place every year. Traditional dance performances are given during the celebrations. Date : DU 7 NOV AU 7 DÉC SUR LES BERGES DU FLEUVE WOURI
It's the traditional festival of the Sawa people of coastal Cameroon, held every year in the first week of December. Originally, this festival was a gathering of Sawa children to take protective measures against any invaders. Over the years, however, Ngondo has evolved into a major ritual ceremony for communicating with the ancestors and water genies, the "Jengu", to ask for their protection. On the day of the meeting with the ancestors, the chiefs and their notables go to the banks of the Wouri, dressed in ceremonial garb. The ancestors' message is collected by a diver in a sacred vase and read to the entire assembly gathered on the riverbank. Many witnesses can attest to the fact that the diver emerges from the water completely dry, as he is protected by the Jengu... This ceremony is also the occasion for the election of the Miss Ngondo, a traditional dance show and a pirogue race on the Wouri.
